The electric field of an infinite line of positive charge is directed radically outward from the wire and can be calculated using Gauss s law for the electric field (see Example 22.6 in Section 22.4). Use Gauss s law for magnetism to show that the magnetic field of a straight, infinitely long, current-carrying conductor cannot have a radial component.
