In Colonization: Second Contact (Harry Turtledove, Ballantine Publishing Group, 1999), the Earth has been partially settled by aliens from another planet, whom humans call Lizards. Laboratory study by humans of Lizard science requires “shifting back and forth between the metric system and the one the Lizards used, which was also based on powers of ten but used different basic quantities for everything but temperature.” Why might temperature be an exception?
