Statement of a problem № 3305

        next

Because of the rotation of the earth a plumb bob when hung may not point exactly in the direction of the earth's gravitational force on the plumb bob. It may slightly deviate through a small angle. (a) Show that at latitude L, the deflection angle T in radians is given by T = (2·pi^2R/gT^2)sin 2L where R is the radius of earth and T is the period of the earth's rotation. (b) At what latitude is the deflection maximum? (c) What is the deflection at the equator?

Solution:
Because of the rotation of the earth a plumb bob when hung may not point exactly
